November 2021 Events


PHILADELPHIA NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLES

Philadelphia has a wealth of virtuosic chamber ensembles championing  new music by living composers:

  • Orchestra 2001 presents ¡CONEXIONES! Argentina at Teatro Esperanza featuring works by Argentine composers on November 6.

  • Network for New Music kicks off their season at the Ice Box with a program titled Projections on November 7.

  • Relâche relaunches in person concerts at Penn Museum on November 7 with Re-Union.

  • The Crossing Choir presents Motions Studies in two parts. The first is a Reading Event at Stotesbury Mansion and the second is the performance of Motion Studies at Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill


PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA

The Philadelphia Orchestra continues its season with more new music. First, November 5-7, the orchestra performs works by Igee Dieudonné, Davóne Tines, John Adams, Carlos Simons, and Anthony Davis. Then November 11-13 the orchestra gives the Philadelphia premiere of Jacob Bancks’s Clarinet Concerto, a Philadelphia Orchestra co-commission. November 18 - 20, the orchestra performs Adoration by Florence Price. And finally at the end of the month, an online stream of works by Igee Dieudonné, Davóne Tines, John Adams, Carlos Simons, and Anthony Davis.

The Philadelphia Orchestra also continues its series Our City, Your Orchestra with two concerts at Grant Blvd on Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 featuring a quartet of cello, oboe, french horn, and flute.


PHILADELPHIA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society begins November featuring bass-baritone Davóne Tines with the Dover Quartet performing a work by Caroline Shaw among others at the Perelman Theater in the Kimmel Center. Then on November 23, violinist Jennifer Koh and pianist Thomas Sauer perform works by American composer Andrew Norman.


THE ROTUNDA + UPENN MUSIC

In University City, The Rotunda and University of Pennsylvania Department of Music are presenting in person concerts of new and experimental music. First on November 7, the rescheduled concert of Dan Blacksberg’s site specific sonic performance “community” outside of The Rotunda. Then on November 13, the ambient music series Event Horizon returns to The Rotunda.

On November 10, UPenn graduate student Ania Vu presents Across Cultures and Time, a concert of her music at the Van Pelt Library. Finally on November 22, the UPenn Department of Music presents their ensemble in residence the Daedalus Quartet.


STREAMING AND LIVE EVENTS

  • On November 1, American Composers Forum, Philadelphia Chapter presents an Artist to Artist Talk with Diego Schissi and Orlando Haddad as a forerunner to the Orchestra 2001 concert on November 6.

  • Percussionist Andy Thierauf is giving a Fall Faculty Recital at Kutztown University that will be live-streamed on November 2nd. The concert features solo percussion works with electronics and spoken word.

  • The Woodlands is hosting two Music at the Mansion events, the first is November 11 and the second November 21. Use code MATM20 for discounted tickets.

  • November 13 - 14 Lyric Fest presents two in person performances of A Time To Mourn featuring Michelle Johnson, Hannah Ludwig, Richard Ollarsaba, Laura Ward at the piano, and with Alora Young, Youth Poet Laureate of the Southern United States, reading.

  • The Philadelphia Clef Club continues its Online Master Class Series with Pianist and composer Michele Rosewoman, known for New Yor-Uba jazz ensembles that have been blending post-bop and Afro-Cuban folk idioms since the 80s.

  • Fire Museum Presents Daniel Levin and Maneri Duo on November 20 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement. This performance will also be a record release show for Julius Masri’s newest album, The Arabic Room.


ON GOING

  • Opera Philadelphia presents Organ Stops, a musical tour of Philadelphia’s historic pipe organs with the Opera Philadelphia Chorus. Among works to be performed are newer works written specifically for chorus and organ by contemporary composers Hannah Kendall, Melissa Dunphy, Marcus DeLoach, and David Hurd.
