June 2021 events


 THE CROSSING

In June the Crossing presents it’s Month of Moderns series with three outdoor, socially distanced performances. The first takes place in New Hope at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve from June 3rd - 6th. This performance features a reprise of their October concerts: The Forest by Donald Nally and Kevin Vondrak.

The second performance will be presented at The Woodlands in West Philadelphia from June 11th - 13th. The choir will perform the world premiere of composer Matana Roberts’ "we got time,” a work honoring the life of Breonna Taylor.

The final performance of June will be at Awbury Arboretum in Germantown from June 18th - 19th and include At which point, a new work by Wang Lu, based on poetry of 2019 Pulitzer winner Forrest Gander and Shift, by Ayanna Woods; an expanded version of our 2020 commission.

PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA

The Philadelphia Orchestra continues into June with both streaming and in person performances. On June 10th the orchestra will perform the U.S. premiere of Mason Bates Undistant which will be available to stream until June 17th. Then there are two in person “pop up” performances as part of their Our City Your Orchestra series. The first on June 14th will be at the Fabric Workshop and Museum and the second will be June 28th at William Way.

MORE STREAMING AND IN PERSON CONCERTS

  • Dan Blacksberg along with University City District presents four live performances at the Trolley Portal Gardens near 40th and Baltimore in June. The line up includes June 6: Radiant Others with David Licht, June 12: Ya Chives with Daniel Kaplowitz, June 19: The Nazir Ebo Project, and June 26: Snake Lines

  • Launching June 4th, the Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK is a free, GPS-enabled work of public art that uses music to illuminate the natural environment. Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and sound artist Ellen Reid, the experience is guided by the listener: the path you choose dictates the music you hear, and no two visits will be exactly the same.

  • The Fairmount String Quartet is excited to present "Sky Dances", a magical program of works of multiple genres uniting around feelings of joy, celebration, wonder, and reverie featuring works by Jennifer Higdon, Ellen Fishman and others. The performances are June 16 at Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and June 26th in Newtown Square, PA.

  • WRTI continues the Friday Choral Connection with the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus performaning work by Andrea Clearfield on June 4th and Michael Djupstrom on June 11.

  • On June 6th Relâche presents Re-Emerging Together live in person at the Penn Museum. The concert features oud player Roger Mgrdichian and Relâche musicians Lloyd Shorter and Wes Morton in a performance exploring the common threads of our new global experience.

  • On June 23rd, Orchestra 2001 presents Conexões Brazil featuring live-streamed performances that spotlight the arts and traditions of Brazil.

  • Bowerbird continues its late night concert series Liminal States with guitarist Loren Connors on June 27 and then on June 30th presents a live streamed concert of music by Frederic Rzewski.


STREAMING WORKSHOPS 

  • On June 2nd Fidget presents a lecture by Thomas Patteson titled Aeolian Harps and Algorithms: Toward a Posthumanist Model of Music in which he will share some of his current research into compositional paradigms based on systems concepts, emergence, and nonhuman intelligence. 

  • The Clef Club of Philadelphia presents a master class by bassist Reggie Workman on June 12th. Reggie Workman is one of the premier bassists in jazz, performing in mainstream jazz as well as in the avant-garde scene, and a member of two of jazz’s most important groups: the John Coltrane Quartet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

  • On June 16th the American Composers Forum presents a Professional Development Panel on Film Composition with established film composers discussing the film industry and the essentials of being a film composer.
